Silicone Gel Implants Approved for First-Time Breast Augmentation in the U.S.

- ORLANDO, FL, November 22, 2006 - The Food and Drug Administration has approved both Mentor and McGhan brand silicone gel breast implants for primary (first-time) breast augmentation.
Effective immediately
Until Friday, November 17, 2006 breast augmentation with silicone gel breast implants was an option in the United States for only breast reconstruction patients and a few other women for whom saline augmentation was not a good option. The FDA now has approved silicone implants for all women over 22 years old.

Dr. Hartog, at the Bougainvillea Clinique in Orlando, FL, has been a participant in ongoing silicone gel studies for the last 10 years, and is approved to begin silicone gel breast augmentation for first time breast augmentation patients, effective immediately.
Full array of options
Options now available to all women over 22 years of age include both silicone gel and saline implants, adjustable implants, and three placement choices: subglandular, submuscular or dual plane placement. There are four incision approaches:

1. Inframammary (under the breast)
2. Areola (below the nipple)
3. Transaxillary (armpit)
4. The TUBA (belly button) procedures

It should be noted that silicone implants are not approved for placement through the TUBA incision. Many women have shown an interest in the newer "gummy bear" or "cohesive gel" implants. Both Mentor Memory Gel and McGhan Cohesive Gel implants are similar in this respect. Silicone gel implants are available in a variety of shapes ranging from low to moderate to high profile, either round or anatomical, as well as with either a textured surface or a smooth surface.
Changing from saline to silicone
For those individuals who already have saline breast implants, and who want to change to silicone implants, this is now an option.

The Bougainvillea Clinique in Orlando, Florida, is offering reduced fees for women who wish to exchange their saline implants for silicone implants. In some instances this could even be done under local anesthetic, which makes for an easier preparation and recovery, as well as cost savings.
Advantages of silicone gel implants
Silicone gel implants have a more natural look and feel, they have less tendency towards rippling which can be felt or seen, and they weigh slightly less for each given size than saline implants.
